What to look for in a billiards table
When it comes to pool tables, not all are created equal. There are standards and requirements that should be met before purchasing a pool table.
The first thing that should be looked at is the material of the table. A lot of tables out there are made of cheap material and you should not settle for anything less than a solid wood frame. Though you aren’t going to throw any parties on it, it should be able to support at least 500 pounds.
Quality of the top rails is something that should be checked. Solid wood is best for the top rails as well for two reasons: because most are made of particle board, they don’t last as long; also, the cushions can be glued to the wood and last much longer than when glued to other materials. Solid wood top rails will last much longer, which will save money down the road. Balls will rebound much better with a solid wood top rail, which will make the game more exciting.
Cushions are something to keep in check as well. If the cushions aren’t of high quality, you can expect to be paying more money in the future. Cushions should be a full profile K-66 cushion, and be backed by canvas. Cushions should also have a high grade of rubber, Grade A is recommended. Most lesser-quality tables will have Grade B or C for cushions which don’t have as good rebound quality.
A pool table’s cloth should be a wool/nylon blend. There are many different cloths but this has proven to be the best. The best cloth would be a 20-ounce, 80% wool, 20% nylon cloth.
Looking at the table leg construction is advised. Be sure it is made with sturdiness in mind. Keep these tips in mind and you’ll be playing some fun billiards in no time.
